If you ever dealt with GoDaddy, you know that they use every trick possible to make it as hard as possible for anyone to move their domains to another registrar. I even wouldn’t mind using them if they would offer their services for a reasonable price, but they are on average at least twice as expensive as other providers.
Why do I even buy domains with GoDaddy?
If you want to purchase any auction domain, you will find that GoDaddy has the biggest pool of them, and that is the only reason why I am using them, if I need to buy a new domain, I wouldn’t touch them with a pole.
So recently I wanted to transfer some of the domains I bought with GoDaddy and let me tell they sure don’t make the process easy for you.
So as you know, or maybe you don’t as they don’t really tell you anywhere if you have enabled privacy on your domain you have to cancel it before you can transfer the domain to another registrar.
When I tried it I got this very helpful error:
I tried to search and, couldn’t find anything about this, even on their forums. I was trying different things and finally succeeded.
How to remove privacy on a domain with GoDaddy
You cannot remove privacy as long as you have enabled auto-renewal. So before you can successfully remove privacy you have to cancel your auto-renewal. It makes no sense, you cannot find anything on the web about this and I guess they do it just to deter you from using another registrar. To be honest, I wasn’t super diligent on transferring my domains to other registrars but this fact made me rethink my strategy and I have now moved all of my domains to other registrars, even if the total money isn’t a big sum, it is simply out of principle.
If you are using GoDaddy, do yourself a favor and move all your domains somewhere else, they are just leveraging their monopoly and scamming people out of their money and make it extremely difficult to move away.
